Welcome to Lucy's Swim A Mile Page!
Eight years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. My prognosis was terrifying, and the treatment protocol daunting. But as I embarked on what would be nearly a year of multiple surgeries, chemotherapy treatments and radiation sessions, I was so fortunate to be lifted up by a community of friends and relatives who supported me and my family so that I could focus on getting better. Almost a decade later, I am so grateful to be alive and eager to give back.
Earlier this year, I joined the board of the Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC), an amazing social justice organization that provides free wellness, counseling and financial support services for women with cancer in the Bay Area. And in October, I will be participating in "Swim a Mile for Women with Cancer" so that women with cancer who are homeless, lack family and community support, and are uninsured or under-insured can have access to the community and psycho-social supports that are so critical during a battle with cancer. I'm trying to do my small part to ensure that these women have the same benefits of support that I experienced during and after my diagnosis and treatment.
Swim A Mile is a fantastic annual fundraiser that benefits the work of WCRC, and I hope you will consider supporting my swim. Since 1986, WCRC has provided programs and a network of supportive services for women with cancer in the Bay Area. All of WCRC's services are provided 100% free of charge -- thanks to the generosity of donors like you! All donations are tax-deductible, and make a world of difference to WCRC's clients:
- $25 can buy supplies for WCRC's cultural and healing arts program
- $50 can purchase organic ingredients for its cooking and nutrition program
- $100 can fund a Community Health Advocate in accompanying clients to treatment
- $250 can pay for a comprehensive training for In-Home Support volunteers
- $500 can provide emergency financial assistance for a client with cancer to pay for rent, utilities or groceries
- $1,000 can fund six months of free therapy services
You can donate on this page or send a check with my name in the memo to:
