Thank you for visiting my Swim A Mile page!
Dear Friends and Family:
I am honored to be participating in my second Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer event on October 5 and 6. Last year, I participated and raised funds in memory of my mother, Patti, who lost her battle with leiomyosarcoma in June 2015. I continue my journey this year to honor her memory AND to honor all of the people I know who are living with cancer and cancer survivors.
Many of the women that WCRC provides services to are low-income and have several other important issues that they need support with – some are struggling to feed themselves and their families, others have housing issues or may not have a support system to help them through their cancer journey. Some are facing language barriers that make it hard for them to communicate with their medical team. WCRC provides navigation services in English and Spanish, helping women get to their medical and treatment appointments. These navigators also provide emotional and practical support, including grocery shopping, taking a client to the social security office, or bringing them to the center for a support group or wellness class.
I am deeply honored to be participating in this event as a way to help these very special women get the support they need through their cancer journey. A few weeks ago, I found out that one of the first Latina clients that I met when I started working at WCRC passed away. I have been reflecting a lot on her joy and gratitude. She took para transit from Fremont to get to our center in Berkeley because she benefited from services offered fully in Spanish. She shared with me that she came to get comfort and knowledge, and share joy and hope. At a time when she was feeling physical discomfort from chemo and radiation, she still felt compelled to give back to others. I carry her in my heart – along with others we have lost and those who are still fighting. I join in this event as a way to honor each of them. It is my expression of gratitude for how deeply they have touched my life.
I hope you will support me and make your most generous contribution today. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will go to underwrite the free services offered at WCRC. Sponsors of this event are underwriting all of the event expenses and this event raises one-third of WCRC’s annual budget - $400,000!
Please let me know if you would like to share the name of someone that you would like for me to place on our tribute wall at the event or if you would like to come as a supporter and be a part of this incredible two-day event!
I am deeply grateful for your love and support!
